Our Mission

Mission:BRAIN expands access to safe, life-saving neurosurgical care for patients who would otherwise go untreated. We partner with hospitals, train local teams, and strengthen systems so every patient — no matter where they live — has a chance at high-quality care.

Our work combines surgical missions, education, mentorship, and capacity-building. We support surgeons, trainees, and nurses through hands-on training, research programs, and long-term collaborations that grow local expertise. At the same time, we connect a global network of volunteers and partner hospitals to deliver care in underserved regions and build solutions that last.

Everything we do is driven by equity, compassion, and the belief that specialized care should never depend on geography or income.

From July 31 to August 2, 2025, Mission:BRAIN returned to Guadalajara for three days of surgery, education, and community engagement. Across Hospital Civil de Guadalajara and Hospital Puerta de Hierro, the team performed multiple complex neurosurgical procedures, including pituitary adenoma resections, a posterior fossa tumor surgery, trigeminal neuralgia treatment, and a meningioma removal. Alongside these surgeries, the mission emphasized training, mentorship, pediatric outreach, and leadership development, culminating in a large conference that rallied community support for future neurosurgical resources. Together, the mission embodied Mission:BRAIN’s commitment to Treat, Educate, and Empower through collaborative, lifesaving care.

Mission Brain India West Zone Chapter led a groundbreaking initiative focused on the healthcare and educational needs of school-going children across four cities in Gujarat—Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Nadiad, and Vadnagar. A dedicated team of 6 pediatric healthcare professionals and 75 medical students conducted comprehensive health screenings, reaching over 550 children and identifying a range of medical and developmental conditions. Children were referred to specialists across multiple disciplines for further evaluation and care, while families received counseling guidance, personalized treatment pathways, and education on health and hygiene. With more than 50 hours devoted to this effort, the initiative reflects Mission SHAISHAV’s commitment to using healthcare and education to nurture potential, restore hope, and build a healthier future for the next generation.

Our team traveled to Sierra Leone with partners from Stanford, UCSF, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins to support the official launch of the country’s first neurosurgical services at Connaught Hospital. Working alongside local physicians, nurses, and Mission:BRAIN scholar Dr. Alieu Kamara, we delivered critical equipment, provided hands-on training and mentorship, and helped care for patients who previously had no access to lifesaving neurosurgical treatment. Over several days, we witnessed firsthand how this new service restored hope—enabling patients to regain movement, relieve pain, and reclaim their futures—while laying the foundation for a sustainable neurosurgery program built on partnership, local leadership, and shared commitment.

Mission Brain Chapter MP Shah successfully organized a Health Camp at Bala Hanuman Temple, screening over 200 individuals for diabetes and hypertension using standardized equipment. Alongside screenings, the team focused on education—distributing awareness pamphlets and engaging the community in discussions on malaria and vector-borne disease prevention. With well-trained volunteers and strong community participation, the camp empowered residents with knowledge about their health, truly reflecting Mission:BRAIN’s commitment to Treat, Educate, and Empower.

As the year comes to a close, we are pleased to share how the donated Doppler ultrasound has directly supported our neurosurgical program since it was placed into service on August 21. The equipment has been used in dozens of complex procedures, including endonasal skull base tumor resections, aneurysm surgeries, and microsurgical meningioma cases—significantly expanding safe surgical capabilities. Prior to this donation, patients were required to rent Doppler equipment at an average cost of 10,000 Mexican pesos per case, a major barrier given the region’s average monthly income. By eliminating this expense, the Doppler has improved access to advanced neurosurgical care at one of only two hospitals in Jalisco performing over 1,000 neurosurgeries annually. This update reflects the tangible impact of targeted donations in reducing financial barriers and strengthening sustainable neurosurgical care.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Mission:BRAIN strengthens access to safe neurosurgical care in underserved regions through clinical support, education, and long-term capacity building. The impact of this work connects directly with several key Global Goals: • Good Health and Well-Being: Expanding access to neurosurgical services, supporting local providers, and reducing preventable disability through mission trips, telemedicine, and training. • Quality Education: Building skills through workshops, mentorship, and structured research and leadership programs for students, residents, and surgeons. • Gender Equality: Advancing women in neurosurgery through WINGS, providing mentorship, visibility, leadership pathways, and opportunities for growth. • Reduced Inequalities: Focusing on regions with limited resources to close gaps in access to care, training, and medical infrastructure. • Partnerships for the Goals: Collaborating with hospitals, universities, NGOs, medical societies, and local governments to scale impact and build sustainable change.
