As Latvians, our cultural and spiritual identity is intimately connected to nature and its many cycles. As an agrarian society, the lives of ancient Latvians very much revolved around the seasons and all of nature’s phenomena. This relationship influenced the Latvian culture and traditions over the centuries, and this is legacy carries on with us today. It is this connection that we find at the heart of our stories, dainas, dances and songs. Natural cycles are the basis for our celebrations; Jāņi, Ķekatas, Mārtiņi, and Metenis are all examples of festivities that correspond to the changing of the seasons. In the summers, the cities in Latvia are nearly deserted, as everyone is out in the countryside. It is in Shelton, Washington, in our home nestled in the woods, that the West Coast Latvian Education Center strives to give voice to our rich culture and traditions. Whether it is through an informal gathering of friends for a weekend camping trip, one of our more formal and structured summer programs, or something else in between, the West Coast Latvian Education Center’s goal is to provide our community with rich, meaningful experiences. We hope to not only honor our culture, but also provide those interested with a worthwhile education, and provide a means for our community to come together and celebrate that which connects us and makes us unique.

Because democracies rely upon a well-educated citizenry, CCLET’s mission is to engage Canadians in developing the habits they need to participate in the democratic process. Among the outreach programmes of the Canadian Civil Liberties Trust are Civil Liberties in the Schools and Teaching Civil Liberties. These programs focus on getting students to ask critical questions about their rights and freedoms. By shining the light of inquiry on unfairness, we begin the process of change. Through CCLET guest speakers, conferences, and workshops for schools and community organizations, participants are engaged in lively discussions about their rights and freedoms and the important legal and civil liberties issues created by a pluralistic society. Particular emphasis is on providing programmes for student teachers, and high school law and social studies students.

Spirit being the antonym of matter, the spiritual realm is inclusive and unitive, while the material realm is exclusive and separative. The more spiritual is a thing, the more inclusive and universal it is. Spiritual light dispels darkness is the operating principle of SHEN. There exists a large amount of ignorance born out of misunderstandings of what religion truly teaches. Religion is a two-faced institution. One unites and the other divides. Religion is founded upon one unseen spiritual reality underlying the entire universe. This reality connects us all and defines the unifying face of religion, its core spirituality. Religion also confines this infinite reality in finite forms rendering somebody's God less Godlike, somebody's prophet less prophetic, and another’s community less righteous and deserving. This is the divisive face. Spiritual Heritage Education Network Inc. proposes to use the unifying face to dull the edge of the divisive one.
