SOUTH GREY BRUCE YOUTH LITERACY COUNCIL

The SGB Youth Literacy Council works to meet the needs of children in the Southern Grey-Bruce area by offering confidential one-on-one tutoring to students with learning difficulties. The tutoring service is available for school-aged children from six to eighteen years who are having difficulty with reading, writing and math. Learners are referred to the SGBYLC by teachers and parents who have noticed the child’s learning difficulties but have found it difficult to help. To serve their needs, we rely upon volunteer tutors from the community. Representatives of the SGBYLC work closely with parents and teachers to match students with volunteer tutors, to offer ongoing training and support sessions to tutors, and to enhance public awareness of the importance of family literacy. The work of our tutors often succeeds in bringing learners up to grade level, giving lasting academic results while boosting the children’s confidence and self-esteem.

Please choose either to support our long term sustainability through a donation to our endowment fund (GEM) or to assist with current operational costs by donating directly to the CSC Parents Society. We Are One Jazz Project

The We Are One Jazz Project was founded in 2008 by Toronto-based jazz pianist and educator Howard Rees. It provides a creative answer to the needs of Toronto communities by bringing together young ‘at-risk’ children and master jazz musicians in an enriched learning and performance environment. The project works in partnership with the Toronto District School Board to organize children (grades 3-6) in ‘high priority’ neighbourhoods into large-scale jazz choirs, directed and mentored by master musicians. Rehearsals over a four-month period lead to a public performance at a high-profile venue. Each year, the project touches some 4,000 students, extended family, teachers, and community members. Thousands more learn about the project through alliances with various media, including TV, radio and print coverage, and social networks.
