As Canada’s only national charity promoting LGBT human rights through research, education and community engagement, Egale Canada Human Rights Trust has almost two decades of experience working to create a Canada free of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, thereby preventing discrimination, bullying, and hate crimes based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity so that every Canadian can achieve their full potential unencumbered by hatred and bias.
Poverty alleviation for Orphans and Vulnerable Children remains the key priority action area for Ainembabazi as an organization. Poverty however is more than just increasing income for community members. Fundamentally poverty is about lack of choice – when it comes to education, food, health and other basic human needs and rights. This lack of choice in basic human rights contributes to a lack of hope for the future. It leaves people in basic survival mode and in a vicious cycle of poverty. The programming of Ainembabazi is thus focused on the three critical priority areas of income generation, health and education as the fundamental holistic components to promoting healthy individuals and communities with a choice for their future. Ainembabazi is about creating and supporting those choices and opportunities.
Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan is a volunteer not-for-profit organization founded in 1996 with over ten chapters across Canada. The goals are to advance education and educational opportunities for Afghan women and their families; and to educate and increase the understanding of Canadians about human rights in Afghanistan. Donor funded projects are implemented and managed in partnership with Afghan non-profit organizations. These projects include a number of community schools, village libraries, an orphanage, as well as teacher training, literacy, English and computer classes. The projects are funded mainly from individual donations from Canadians. Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan members were honoured with the YMCA Calgary Peace Award in the International category for their long-standing contribution to supporting peace and human rights for Afghan women and their families.

However a culture defines it, literacy touches every aspect of individual and community life. It is an essential foundation for learning through life and must be valued as a human right. Our primary program is a one-to-one tutoring program that matches trained volunteer tutors with adult learners, to help them meet their literacy goals. Education: We provide speakers and free publications such as the Privacy Handbook, Rights Talk, The Arrest Handbook, Police Complaints and the Citizenship Handbook. Advocacy: We provide direct assistance to individuals who have complaints or concerns about civil liberties violations by government, employers, etc. Common areas of work include police and privacy complaints, free speech and anti-oppression. Policy: We have played a major role in advocating for human rights legislation, police accountability reform, access-to-information and privacy legislation, while also resisting the more draconian anti-terrorism provisions. Litigation: When all else fails, the BCCLA will challenge laws in the courts. We have always fought to preserve freedom of expression in Canada through strategic litigation, such as opposing book bans. If you believe in protecting the rights and freedoms of all Canadians and want to take action on these issues, please become a member or donate today!
