In a relatively short span of time, the Yukon chapter of Habitat for Humanity progressed from a noble concept to a practical plan of action. What we are committed to do together is not just about houses, it is about hope. It is about community values and community leadership. It is about setting a higher standard for affordable housing. Most of all, it is about Yukoners helping Yukoners in a constructive, supportive environment. If you would like to make a difference in our community, I encourage you to remember the words of the great blues artists, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, and "Get on Board"!
Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands was established in 1998 and although based in Brockville, Ontario, serves the geographic area of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. We have built homes in Brockville (1999 and 2005), Gananoque (2001), Athens (2003), and Newboro (2008). These have been single family dwellings of approximately 1,000 square feet. To support the building of future homes, the Thousand Islands ReStore was established in 2006. Unfortunately the ReStore was destroyed by a fire in May 2008. We are currently looking into opening a new ReStore. (A ReStore, when in operation, accepts donations of home improvement and building materials from local corporate donors as well as individual home owners. In turn these materials are resold to individuals and contractors engaged in home renovation projects. The net funds raised by the ReStore provide additional funding for the building of homes, and also reduce the materials sent to landfill sites.
Our totally volunteer operated Humane Society has served Gananoque and the former Front of Leeds Township (now Ward 1 of Leeds & the Thousand Islands) since 1989. Since 1992 we have been a full service affiliate of the Ontario SPCA, managed by an elected Board consisting of local members of the communities we serve. In our history we have never euthanized a healthy adoptable pet just to make space in our Shelter for another. We rescue, rehabilitate and re home about 300 dogs, cats and other small domestic pets annually. Our volunteers raise the money to cover our operating costs through adoption fees, donations, continuous fund raising efforts and occasional help from the municipalities we serve. We are just one small charity trying to address the community problem of homeless animals. We can’t succeed without broad support from everyone in our community. Will you help us solve the problem by donating not only money but also your personal support as a volunteer and adopter?
