The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre exists to support and empower women and children living in extreme poverty in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, British Columbia. High levels of violence, homelessness, addictions and poverty characterize this area. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to exploitation, injustice and injury. We provide practical support to over 250 women and children daily to help them survive conditions of ill-health, violence and poverty. We work to provide security, basic needs and support. We also encourage women in making long-term changes by identifying and removing barriers to full participation in a larger community.
Every woman deserves a safe and healthy life. Women who live with violence and abuse, who struggle to feed and shelter their families or who lack the resources and skills they need to move forward, face a great challenge. For many women, knowing they're not alone provides the hope and support needed to move forward. Since 1977, Women's Centre of York Region has offered a safe place where women can turn for help. We offer a variety of support services and programs to women in transition. We assist women in making better choices for change - from abuse to individual power, and from economic dependence to self-sufficiency. Our clients are courageous women from all cultural, social, ethnic and economic backgrounds who are living with abuse - physical, emotional, mental or sexual, struggling to feed and clothe their families, raising families on their own or seeking entrepreneurial and employment development training.
