Atira Women's Resource Society is a not-for-profit organization committed to the work of ending violence against women through providing direct service, as well as working to increase awareness of and education around the scope and impact on our communities of men's violence against women and children.
PARO Centre provides a caring, supportive environment for women who want to achieve economic stability for themselves and their families. At PARO, we provide support, counseling, and resources so women can achieve a sustainable livelihood. January 2010 marks PARO's 15th year of providing support and resources to women in rural and remote communities of Northwestern Ontario. In 2009 alone, we've touched the lives of approximately 11,960 women and their families. Since PARO's inception in 1995, we have provided training to 1676 women, organized networking opportunities for 4544 women, and provided PARO loans from $500 to $5000, totaling $256,500.
The Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre is a Whitehorse, Yukon based organization that has been offering programming and support to women throughout the Yukon for more than thirty years. The Women’s Advocate offers support and assists women in assessing their options and accessing information and services. The Centre organizes annual events such as International Women’s Day, Sexual Assault Prevention Month and Take Back the Night, and offers various programs such as the Moms and Kids Summer Recreation Program, Rural Pregnant Moms Suite, daily drop-in, the Community Kitchen, film nights, book club, and Girls Club.
The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre exists to support and empower women and children living in extreme poverty in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, British Columbia. High levels of violence, homelessness, addictions and poverty characterize this area. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to exploitation, injustice and injury. We provide practical support to over 250 women and children daily to help them survive conditions of ill-health, violence and poverty. We work to provide security, basic needs and support. We also encourage women in making long-term changes by identifying and removing barriers to full participation in a larger community.
Every woman deserves a safe and healthy life. Women who live with violence and abuse, who struggle to feed and shelter their families or who lack the resources and skills they need to move forward, face a great challenge. For many women, knowing they're not alone provides the hope and support needed to move forward. Since 1977, Women's Centre of York Region has offered a safe place where women can turn for help. We offer a variety of support services and programs to women in transition. We assist women in making better choices for change - from abuse to individual power, and from economic dependence to self-sufficiency. Our clients are courageous women from all cultural, social, ethnic and economic backgrounds who are living with abuse - physical, emotional, mental or sexual, struggling to feed and clothe their families, raising families on their own or seeking entrepreneurial and employment development training.
North York Women's Shelter has been re-building lives since 1984. We operate a 30-bed emergency shelter for women and their children who are survivors of violence and abuse. We also operate a 24-hour crisis line. The primary service we provide to women and their children is shelter and safety. We offer individual counselling and a variety of programs and workshops. Our counsellors empower, nurture, support and encourage abused women and their children through their recovery period.
The Centre works with women to increase their access to knowledge, skills and resources so they can make informed and strategic choices. The Centre also advocates for systemic change to public policies and practices that impact women's lives.
The Golden Women's Resource Centre offers the following services and programs to women free of charge: safe homes program, shelter for women and children fleeing abuse, crisis support, outreach program, advocacy & support, internet access, resource library, Good Karma Clothing Exchange, computer support, children's playroom, cozy lounge, free condoms & female supplies, photocopying & faxing, Girlz Group program, workshops, and more!
Battered Women's Support Services contributes to the freedom and liberation of girls and women from violence and to empower our community through training and education programs. For over 30 years, we have been providing counselling and healing spaces for those who have experienced abuse. To help women build strength and resiliency, we work on systemic advocacy, law reform, in-class youth engagement programs and we operate a social enterprise called My Sister’s Closet in British Columbia. In addition, we support our male counterparts by urging them to own their role in ending violence against girls and women.
The Nelson Women's Centre has a drop-in program that has been providing support for women and children of the area for the past 40 years. Women can receive free food, toiletries, clothing, counseling, referrals and a friendly place to be. In addition, the Centre provides a month-long free volunteer skills development training, a youth project focusing on gender-based issues, an intergenerational textile skills project, a feminist library, and many events in the community.
The Calgary Immigrant Women's Association (CIWA) is a non-profit organization established in 1982. CIWA is a culturally diverse support agency that recognizes, responds to, and is focused on the unique concerns and needs of immigrant and refugee women, girls and their families. It is an agency of women helping women. During its 29-year history, CIWA has developed innovative programs, entered into partnerships and become an organization that is truly responsive to the unique and diverse needs of its constituency. Over the years, CIWA has made the transition to Canada a more comfortable, pleasant and successful one for more than 32,000 women. CIWA assists its clients by offering over 34 programs and services in more than 100 community locations. The programs fall under CIWA's five core service areas: Settlement and Integration Language Training and Childcare Employment Skills Services Family Services Volunteer and Community Development
Women's Place of South Niagara Inc. provides safe refuge for victims of violence, offers counselling for the mothers and children, legal advocacy, transitional housing and support, as well as child and youth programs. Last year alone, our shelters received 2,753 crisis calls, provided safe shelter to 311 women and children and assisted hundreds of additional women and children in our outreach programs and services. Nova House and Serenity Place are operated by Women's Place of South Niagara Inc. We have provided quality service to the Southern Niagara communities for over 25 years and thanks to our donors we continue to offer free, confidential and vital services to victims of violence
