The KNOR Foundation for Cancer Research is a namesake, charitable organisation established in honour of a mother, humanitarian and community philanthropist, Harriet Knor. The Foundation was founded in 2007 by a group of Cobourg women who were touched by the determination of a young student. Kristy MacDonald was third-year biology student (and childhood friend of Harriet’s daughter, Leah), who, upon learning of Harriet’s diagnosis, aspired to find a summer placement in a cancer lab. However, the limited funding and resources available to undergraduate students in Canada made it impossible for Kristy to find a clinic or professor that could afford to accept her. It is this story that inspired the KNOR core values—Knowledge, New Minds, Opportunity and Research—along with the women’s commitment to ensure that aspiring students have the chance to make a difference in their community and in the lives of people living with cancer.

Patient Relief Mission

To provide social, holistic and physical support to communities in need through improving cancer care and management for female patients and their caregivers by providing hostel accommodation to those who come from rural areas in order to receive their treatment from the Uganda Cancer Institute at Mulago Hospital. These women would otherwise have nowhere to stay in the city. In addition to hostel accommodation, Patient Relief Mission (PRM) provides three meals a day, transportation to and from the hospital, psycho-social support, and skills training for both patients and care-givers. Through these services, PRM is not only providing opportunities for the women to receive the cancer treatment they need but also equipping them to return to their homes with skills to financially support themselves and their families. The organization's services are implemented by committed and well-trained staff and volunteers.

In 7 years we helped for the total amount of more than 20 000 000 UAH. Almost a third of these funds were used for medicines and medical supplies. We purchased modern equipment for operating rooms and diagnostic laboratories of the hospitals. We renovated an operating room, patient rooms, a kitchen and a game room at the Pediatric Clinic for Neurosurgery, a game room at the Western Ukrainian Specialized Pediatric Medical Center, psychologists' room and physical therapy room at the National Institute of Cancer. We paid for treatment in foreign clinics for four children. We provided more than 20 families with air plane tickets for treatment abroad. Our experts work at the hospitals. We finance the work of psychologists in all the departments that we support and the work of two physiotherapists at the National Cancer Institute. Every day 5-6 families live in our Center for Children Affected by Cancer Dacha. Since opening we have provided free accommodation for about five hundred families. In 2010 we opened a representative office in Lviv which is engaged in the projects related to migration processes in Ukraine.

A Free Bird Corporation

The idea for A Free Bird™ was born out of the creative energy experienced firsthand by singer/songwriter and makeup artist, Godni Amir, founder and president of the organization. When Godni’s voice teacher, Gail found out her husband had been diagnosed with cancer, she had to stop teaching and become his primary caregiver. Soon after, she was also diagnosed with cancer. Although she and her husband struggled to defeat the disease, she never gave up her passion for the arts! Deeply touched by Gail’s determination to continue teaching and pursuing her creative endeavors, Godni was inspired to write music and poetry that reflected her benevolent spirit, which lead to the creation of a poem called “A Free Bird.” After seeing how creative energy could provide solace and inspiration to cancer patients, Godni wanted to share the healing power of the arts with others. A Free Bird™ was then created, delivering the message that everyone should have the opportunity to express themselves and fly free.

Jennie Goas Silverman Foundation

The Jennie Goas Silverman Foundation was created with love by some of Jennie's closest friends to honor her spirit, sparkle and brilliance. Jennie was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in June of 2016 and fought a hard battle with this devastating disease until she passed away on May 20, 2017. Jennie was a special person who impacted the lives of the people she touched. First and foremost she was a daughter, sister, wife and friend, and she always took those roles seriously. Next, she was a teacher, a high school math teacher in the CPS system. She was beautiful inside and out, she was generous, she was brilliant, she was humble and she was kind. These qualities have inspired us to create this foundation and continue to help her spirit live on through philanthropy. The Jennie Goas Silverman Foundations fundraising efforts have a dual approach: 1) Raise funds to award a qualified senior year student(s) in the communities Jennie taught with a scholarship to attend a 4-year college. 2) Raise funds and awareness for Triple Negative Breast Cancer research. Through our mission we hope to give back to the community Jennie lived and worked in and continue to fight in her honor to find a cure for triple negative breast cancer.
