Canadian Whale Institute

Since 1997 the support of Canadian Whale Institute (CWI) has been primarily directed towards efforts to save the highly endangered North Atlantic right whale. These include reducing right whale mortality from ship-strikes, entanglement in fishing gear and raising public awareness. CWI Current Initiatives ‘Helping to save one species from the brink of extinction can very well help humankind preserve our planet’ Stewardship and Conservation Despite international protection from whaling since 1935 the North Atlantic right whale is hovering on the brink of extinction: about 350 remain. CWI supports many research projects and stewardship measures taking place throughout the Canadian range of the species. Researchers who receive CWI support have contributed to the development of the Canadian recovery plan and the relocation of the Bay of Fundy shipping lanes; thereby helping to reduce the number of whales dying due to ship-strikes.
