Humane Canada

Since 1957, the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS) has worked to unite and strengthen humane societies & SPCAs while advocating for the humane treatment of animals in our homes, on the farm, in the lab, and in the wild. The CFHS's member societies help animals in communities across Canada. The CFHS represents these members on issues of national importance, and provides them with information and advice to help them better serve animals in their communities. Over the decades, the CFHS has been at the forefront of efforts to reform Canada’s shamefully lax animal cruelty law, to create rules protecting farm animals from undue suffering, and to improve the treatment of animals used in research. The CFHS receives no government funding. It depends on the support of caring Canadians to continue promoting responsible pet ownership, fighting for effective laws to protect animals, and strengthening humane societies and SPCAs nationwide.

THE PETERBOROUGH HUMANE SOCIETY

The Peterborough Humane Society, a registered charitable organization dependent on public donations, was established in 1941. As an Affiliated Society of the OSPCA, with the mandate to facilitate and provide for the prevention of cruelty to animals and their relief therefrom, our Humane Society offers a wide range of vital services to the community. Working in cooperation with many agencies and departments we continue promoting responsible pet ownership concepts through community outreach, one-on-one encounters with residents and the use of legal action as the last resort. Approximately 1,500 animals are received at the shelter each year, many of which are lost, injured or abandoned. While in our care they are provided with food, care, shelter and lots of love and attention. We speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. The Peterborough Humane Society is grateful to our supporters, staff, and volunteers for their wonderful support and dedication.

Habitat for Humanity Edmonton

We build simple, decent homes using donations of financial support, building materials and time that are all generated through the local community. After investing hundreds of hours to build their homes and those of their neighbours, our families assume no-interest, no down-payment mortgages that reflect the market value of the home. Monthly mortgage payments are continually reinvested into future home construction. Habitat for Humanity’s success rests in its fundamental belief that a community can create its own solutions for those in need by coming together to provide a hand up — not a handout. Habitat for Humanity provides the framework to build homes for families and hope for generations.

Halifax Humanities 101

The Halifax Humanities Society Society sponsors the university-level, non-credit program, Halifax Humanities 101. This unique educational opportunity is offered to adults living below the poverty line. The course involves twice weekly classes, taught by university professors who volunteer their time. The curriculum focuses on the "Great books" that have shaped Western culture, from ancient Greek and Roman epics to contemporary classics of American and Canadian literature. Through the study of these great works in literature and philosophy, students find an opportunity, in the midst of stressful lives, to read and reflect. This time for study has proven to be very helpful in moving students from lives of frustration and reaction to lives of thoughtful reflection and intelligent engagement as citizens. Every barrier to learning is removed in this totally free of charge program so that the students can focus on the challenge and rewards of profound learning.

VANCOUVER HUMANE SOCIETY

The Vancouver Humane Society is an animal charity working locally, provincially and nationally and funded primarily by public donations. We do not operate an animal shelter; rather we work on the underlying problems of animal abuse by exposing animal cruelty to the public and informing individuals how their choices impact animals. Our primary areas of work are: animals in entertainment (zoos, rodeos, circuses, the film industry, sled dog operations); animals on factory farms (caged egg-laying hens, "broiler" or "meat" chickens, and other intensive confinement systems via our 'Eat Less Meat' project); and companion animals, including spay/neuter and emergency veterinary medical assistance for pet guardians on limited income. VHS is one of the few animal organizations that encourages vegetarianism, as not eating animals is the most effective way to stop animal suffering.
