Health
Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation

On April 1, 2008, the Northern Cancer Research Foundation and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation joined forces to become Northwestern Ontario's most effective fundraising organization. The integrated foundation represents more effectively the needs of patients and their families, with efforts encompassing all areas of healthcare delivery as well as medical research and disease prevention. The new Health Sciences Foundation features three specialty funds: the Northern Cancer Fund, the Northern Cardiac Fund and the Health Sciences Discovery Fund. Each fund represents an area of high activity and high need in our community: in Northwestern Ontario, Cancer and Cardiac Disease are responsible for the vast majority of deaths, while medical research is the single most significant area of growth and promise in our community. Donors are able to designate their gifts to either fund or can support any area of care within the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

CHILDREN'S HEART SOCIETY

Heart disease in children is the most common birth defect - occurring in one in every 100 births. In comparison: neural tube defects occur one in 1000 births, orofacial clefts affect one in 700 to 1000 births. The most frequent cause of infant deaths is due to congenital heart abnormalities. Heart disease in children does not discriminate; it can happen to a child of any nationality or socio-economic background. Because heart disease, unlike cancer, is a hidden illness, the general public is unaware that children do suffer from what most of us believe to be an adult illness.
