The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) was founded in 1981 by a group of U.S. journalists determined to help secure greater press freedom for colleagues abroad threatened by repressive governments and other enemies of independent journalism. CPJ has become a vitally important institution to journalists and news organizations around the world. We have a highly specialized brief: CPJ is the only organization in the United States devoted solely to reporting and responding to attacks on individual journalists and to other specific press freedom violations throughout the world.
