Friends Of Karen

Friends of Karen is the only organization in the New York Tri-State area that provides comprehensive support, at no cost, to families caring for a child battling cancer or another life-threatening illness, from diagnosis through treatment. Friends of Karen believes that families can maintain a sense of balance and stability even during the crisis of their child's illness. This belief fuels our personal advocacy for families through our team of dedicated professionals -- social workers, child life specialists and creative arts therapists -- to ensure that each family receives the emotional, financial and practical help they desperately need throughout their child's treatment, which can last many months or even years. Friends of Karen began in 1978 when one caring person wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter Karen. Today, we have helped more than 14,000 children and their families.

Hana's Hope

Hana spent her entire professional career assisting hair-loss clientele and operating a successful hair and wig salon. Suddenly she was faced with her own "journey of one thousand miles." Nineteen years ago a series of fundraisers organized by a loving family member, friends and compassionate strangers were held to raise financial support to help pay insurmountable medical bills for an advanced stage breast cancer patient. That patient was Hana. Humbled by the outpouring of support and love of so many people, Hana realized that the concept of "Hana's Hope" would be a perfect vehicle to "Pay It Forward," especially for clients with few or no financial resources. Hana has worked with many top oncology departments and hospitals in the Denver Metro area, including Children's Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital, Boulder Community Hospital and Rose Medical Center. She has built a reputation as one of the most prestigious self-imaging services for clients who face hair loss and changed skin conditions resulting from medical issues.

Ronald McDonald House (Long Beach, CA)

After years of careful planning and preparation, the community responded and in less than two years of fund raising through private gifts and grants, $6 million was raised to bring Ronald McDonald House to Long Beach. The Long Beach House joined more than 300 other Ronald McDonald Houses in 58 countries and regions around the world.  Locally, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California operates Houses in Bakersfield, Loma Linda, Los Angeles, Orange, and Pasadena.  The chapter also operates Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, a free, medically-supervised, year-round sleep away camp for children with cancer and their siblings, as well as two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at CHOC in Orange and CHOC at Mission in Mission Viejo, which serve as an oasis for families inside of hospitals. Additionally, the chapter awards scholarship funds to exceptional high school students and community grants to non-profit organizations that benefit children. Research shows that a family's presence in the hospital helps children heal. Staying close by allows parents to better communicate with their child's medical team and improves adherence to complicated treatment plans. These are only some of the reasons that make Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California an important organization. The Long Beach Ronald McDonald House is a program of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California.
