OTTAWA DRAGON BOAT FOUNDATION

In 1998, a charitable component was added to the Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival raising funds for local charities on an annual basis. The Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation was established in 2003 to help focus and grow this necessary component of the Festival. To date over $1,500,000 has been raised through the annual Pledge Challenge. The Pledge Challenge is an opportunity for our paddlers to raise funds for local charities. Money is raised on behalf of the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation and then dispersed to the selected charities. In 2009, the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation will be supporting a total of eight local charities through a three-tier system. 2009 Charities Include: The Sens Foundation (project s.t.e.p), Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health, POGO, Candleighters Childhood Cancer Support, OCRI Breakfast Program, Algonquin College Foundation, Ottawa's Children Treatment Centre, Good Day Workshop.

NAKAI THEATRE

Nakai Theatre, based in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada, is a non-profit professional theatre company dedicated to helping local playwrights get their plays to the stage. We offer a 24hr Playwriting Competition to get them started; a Homegrown Theatre Festival to help them produce selections of their plays; script development workshops and dramaturgy; and the opportunity to present their work at our national and international Pivot Theatre Festival. Finally, we take the most promising scripts and mount full productions. Many of our productions deal with significant social and health issues in Northern Canada: Alzheimer's disease, homelessness, poverty, alcohol addiction and cancer. In our 32 year history (1979 to 2011) we have brought over 50 Yukon scripts to the stage. Nakai Theatre is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres, and is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts. We are a registered charity.

CHILDREN'S HEART SOCIETY

Heart disease in children is the most common birth defect - occurring in one in every 100 births. In comparison: neural tube defects occur one in 1000 births, orofacial clefts affect one in 700 to 1000 births. The most frequent cause of infant deaths is due to congenital heart abnormalities. Heart disease in children does not discriminate; it can happen to a child of any nationality or socio-economic background. Because heart disease, unlike cancer, is a hidden illness, the general public is unaware that children do suffer from what most of us believe to be an adult illness.
