We live in a country that is experiencing an alarming increase in the incidence of HIV especially among young women. We live on a planet where 33.4 million people are now infected with HIV. Twenty-two million of these are in Sub-Saharan Africa, 60 per cent of those are women. The greatest tragedy lies with the 15 million orphans and vulnerable children left in the wake of HIV/AIDS. Bracelet of Hope reached its first target in partnership with OHAfrica, raising $1 million in support of the Tsepong Clinic. Tsepong was the first HIV/AIDS clinic in Lesotho, Africa. Bracelet of Hope will continue in its efforts to reach its second target: One African Country-AIDS free... Olive Tree Projects runs a maternity centre just outside of Jacmel city, in the south of Haiti, providing accessible prenatal, labour and delivery, and post natal care to women in the community. OTP charges a small fee for its prenatal to postnatal care at the maternity centre. This way, we are not adding to the culture of dependency that is created through hand-outs. Through our nutrition program, we offer weekly nutritional classes for the mothers of malnourished children while monitoring the growth of these children who are being treated with a three month course of Medika Mamba, a highly fortified peanut butter meal. OTP also runs a small handicraft project for women and teens called Project Amen. The handicrafts are sold to visitors in Haiti and at fundraisers in North America. The members of Project Amen use the money they earn for education and for their families. The projects of OTP are run by Sarah in Haiti, along with a few local staff.

The lack of supportive housing for vulnerable women in Toronto is a chronic problem. A significant increase in supportive housing units is needed immediately just to stem the "destructive treadmill" of psychiatric hospitals, squalid rooming houses and life on the streets. This vicious cycle seriously undermines a woman's ability to recover. Many of our residents have been homeless, are survivors of physical, emotional and sexual abuse and many have lost all traditional family support.
